Fresh graduates Mark Anthony Colentava and Laurence Arguelles recently went on a tour of the Google headquarters in Silicon Valley as part of their prize as grand winners of the 10th SWEEP Innovation and Excellence Awards. These two SWEEP alumni showed how creative minds and disruptive innovations can literally bring you places. These former students of Bataan Peninsula State University developed the CoinSaver, which won the grand prize at the 10th SWEEP Innovation and Excellence Awards of Smart Communications, Inc.  CoinSaver is a kiosk-like device that allows users to save for a product or service that they want by dropping coins. Linked to the mobile phone, the user will receive an SMS voucher once the amount is paid for in full.  The voucher can then be exchanged for the product/service.

As grand winner, the team also won P500,000 plus the equivalent cash grant for their school.  The team also gets the chance to go the startup route under the tutelage of incubator and accelerator IdeaSpace Foundation, Inc. of the First Pacific group of companies in the Philippines, including Smart.

SWEEP, short for Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program, is the first-of-its-kind partnership between the industry and the academe that seeks to enhance the quality of engineering and IT education in the country. For more details on CoinSaver and SWEEP, visit www.smartsweep.ph.
